A comprehensive evaluation of jaw muscle activity, bite pattern and tension to explore conservative options for improving comfort and facial balance.

The masseter muscles are large, powerful muscles located on either side of the jaw and play a key role in chewing and jaw movement. In some individuals, these muscles can become enlarged or overactive, a condition known as masseter hypertrophy. This is commonly associated with chronic jaw clenching, teeth grinding (bruxism), stress or habitual muscle overuse.
Enlargement of the masseter muscles may contribute to both functional symptoms and aesthetic changes. Functionally, individuals may experience jaw tightness, facial pain, headaches, tooth wear, neck tension and discomfort while chewing. Aesthetically, masseter hypertrophy can create a wider or more square appearance in the lower face, which may feel out of balance with other facial features.
Because jaw clenching and masseter hypertrophy can be associated with underlying medical, dental and behavioural factors, a thorough medical assessment is essential. These symptoms may be linked to TMJ disorders, stress response patterns, malocclusion (bite issues) or sleep-related conditions such as bruxism.
During a masseter and jaw clenching consultation in Sydney, Dr Brandon performs a detailed assessment of:
Consideration is also given to lifestyle factors, posture, stress levels and sleep quality. In some cases, referral for dental review, imaging or a multidisciplinary approach may be recommended.
A personalised, conservative management plan may then be discussed to reduce muscular overactivity, relieve symptoms and improve functional comfort while maintaining natural facial balance.
These consultations are suitable for individuals experiencing jaw tension, clenching or grinding, headaches related to jaw strain, or noticing changes in lower face width due to muscle overactivity.
