Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are medical conditions that affect the joints and muscles responsible for jaw movement. The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull and play an essential role in speaking, chewing, swallowing and yawning. When these joints or the surrounding muscles become dysfunctional, a range of symptoms may develop.

Common signs and symptoms associated with TMJ disorders can include jaw pain or tightness, clicking or popping sensations, difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully, facial pain, headaches, ear discomfort and muscle fatigue. In some individuals, teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw clenching, stress, trauma, arthritis, bite alignment issues or muscle overactivity may contribute to symptom development.

Because TMJ disorders can be linked to underlying anatomical, muscular or systemic conditions, a comprehensive medical assessment is important. Accurate diagnosis requires careful evaluation of medical history, symptom pattern, contributing factors and functional jaw movement.

During a TMJ consultation in Sydney, Dr Brandon performs a targeted assessment of the jaw joints, surrounding musculature, facial structure and bite pattern. Consideration is also given to stress levels, posture, sleep quality and habit-related factors such as clenching or grinding. In some cases, referral for imaging or dental collaboration may be recommended as part of a multidisciplinary approach.

A personalised management plan may then be discussed, focused on reducing strain on the joints and muscles, improving function and addressing contributing factors in a safe, conservative and evidence-based manner.

These consultations are suitable for individuals experiencing chronic jaw tension, facial discomfort, headaches associated with jaw tightness or functional limitations of jaw movement.
