Hyaluronic acid (HA)–based dermal fillers are commonly used in aesthetic medicine and, in many cases, integrate well into the surrounding tissue over time. However, in certain situations, a patient may wish to reduce, adjust or reverse previously placed filler. This may be due to asymmetry, overcorrection, migration, dissatisfaction with appearance, changes over time or complications such as swelling, firmness or vascular concerns.

The dissolving of hyaluronic acid fillers is a medical procedure that requires a detailed understanding of facial anatomy, vascular structures and the original filler placement. Using ultrasound guidance allows for real-time visualisation of filler location, surrounding blood vessels and tissue planes. This significantly improves accuracy and supports a more targeted, precise and safety-focused approach.

Ultrasound-guided assessment is particularly valuable in areas such as the under-eye (tear trough), lips, nasolabial folds, nose and midface, where vascular anatomy is complex and traditional assessment alone may be insufficient. It also allows for better evaluation of filler depth, volume, encapsulation and potential migration.

During a consultation for ultrasound-guided filler dissolving in Sydney, Dr Brandon conducts a comprehensive assessment including:

  • Detailed medical and aesthetic history (including previous treatments)
  • Identification of the type and location of filler
  • Ultrasound imaging to visualise filler and surrounding structures
  • Assessment of symptoms, concerns and desired outcomes

From this, a personalised and conservative management plan may be discussed. Not all filler requires dissolving, and in some cases observation, time or alternative management strategies may be more appropriate.

These consultations are suitable for individuals who have had previous hyaluronic acid filler treatment and are experiencing concerns, uncertainty about prior placement, complications, or who wish to explore safe options for adjustment or reversal under medical guidance.
