A tailored evaluation of skin barrier function and hydration levels to address dryness, sensitivity and moisture imbalance.

Skin dryness and dehydration are common concerns that can affect individuals of all ages. Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, they represent different processes within the skin. Dry skin refers to a lack of natural oils (lipids), while dehydrated skin reflects a deficiency of water content within the skin. Both can compromise the skin barrier, resulting in tightness, flaking, dullness, increased sensitivity and an accentuation of fine lines.
As we age, the skin’s ability to retain moisture diminishes due to a reduction in natural moisturising factors, impaired barrier function and a gradual decline in hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the skin responsible for attracting and retaining water. One gram of hyaluronic acid is capable of binding up to six litres of water, making it essential for maintaining skin hydration, plumpness and elasticity.
Environmental factors such as UV exposure, wind, low humidity, air conditioning, harsh skincare products and frequent washing can further disrupt hydration levels. Lifestyle factors, including inadequate fluid intake, poor nutrition and certain medications, may also contribute to compromised skin hydration.
Skin dryness and dehydration consultations in Sydney focus on assessing the integrity of the skin barrier, moisture levels, elasticity and overall skin health. Areas commonly affected include the face, neck, hands and décolletage.
During the consultation, Dr Brandon evaluates individual contributing factors, current skincare practices and underlying skin conditions. A personalised management plan may be discussed to support hydration at a cellular level, strengthen the skin barrier and improve overall texture, radiance and resilience over time.
These consultations are suitable for those experiencing dull, tight, flaky or sensitised skin, as well as for individuals seeking preventative skin health strategies and long-term maintenance.
